This would seem to explain the mysterious elusiveness of the island, but then a M. Epidariste Collin of Isle of France claimed to have been assured by the secretary of the government of Mozambique that their archives held the instructions for the evacuation of the ‘Portuguese colony of Juan de Lisboa’, as well as an inventory of belongings transported from the island to the coast of Africa. Collin, however, had been unable to confirm the existence of this document with his own eyes.

There is no such island as Juan de Lisboa and, considering the frequency of its sighting in circumstances of wild storms and visually deceptive conditions, it seems likely that it is the result of confusion with the Madagascan coast, Réunion Island or even, perhaps, Mauritius, as M. Epidariste Collin had himself theorized, before learning of the strange story of the island’s supposed evacuation to Africa.
